Shahrukh Khan, an icon in the world of Indian cinema, was detained at Newark Liberty International Airport in New York City, and questioned.

Khan says the experience left him ‘angry and humiliated’, and blamed US airport security of singling him out because he was a Muslim.

Newark officials, however, say that he was given routine checks, and was detained mostly because his luggage was lost, and so a search had to be undertaken.

India’s government has said that they will aggressively pursue an explanation of the slight against the actor, which is one of many to occur in recent years.

Just last month, former president Abdul Kalam was frisked before getting onto a flight from New Delhi, despite laws that prohibit such actions against former Indian leaders.

“I can understand America’s need for caution after 9/11 but they also need to be a little more thoughtful about their methods,” Irrfan Khan, another Bollywood actor, was quoted by AFP. He has been detained on three occasions, each one by US officials in various countries.

An effigy of President Barack Obama has been burned in protest, and India is seeking an apology and explanation for the incident.
